CLOSET INVENTORY

This assignment made me catalog my closet a way in which I never have before. I realized that I do wear a good chunk of my wardrobe during the process. My closet is compiled mostly of tops; I have a lot of tank tops, t-shirts and sweaters-roughly around 100. I realized that many could see that as being excessive but I frequently make sure that I use everything I have in my closet. I do not keep many pieces that I rarely wear. I believe in the thought that in order to bring more clothes in you have to kick some out.

The other main items that compile my wardrobe are pants. I have around 20 pairs in different colors, materials and prints. Other than that I have around 10 dresses, jackets and pairs of shorts. I realized most of my clothes were made in places like Indonesia, Guatemala, Bangladesh and of course China. A lot of my tops were made in third world countries. That came to no surprise for me considering all we have learned in class. Most of my clothes were purchased from fast fashion retailers so I expected those countries on the labels. This has become the reality of the present day fashion market whether we, the consumers, are ok with it or not.

I would say around 95% of my closet was bought new and around 5% were gifts. I do not have any second hand items. That being said I do have a separate excessive amount of promotional “free t-shirts” from high school. That is the most unnecessary part of my wardrobe.

I am not shocked about how much I own. I would have guessed it were around this much. I think my consumption can always be decreased because I do not realistically need any more clothes to survive. Consciously consuming is never a bad thing. I would like to become more educated as to where my shirts are coming from and what they are made from in the future. I think my consumption patterns can be improved in those ways along with trying to find clothing that was ethically made.
